As an undergraduate student, I had the opportunity to create a comprehensive public relations campaign plan for the Division of Inclusion and Equity at Grand Valley State University (GVSU). I conducted primary research (surveys and focus groups) on the GVSU campus climate and secondary research on other successful inclusion initiatives at organizations around the country. I developed an action plan with objectives, strategies, sample tactics, and guidelines for measuring success. Finally, I created a budget for the campaign and a completion timeline for the organization to follow.
Working on this campaign plan was a wonderful experience because it allowed me to dive more deeply into a field I knew little about. Although I attended GVSU as a student for four years, I had no prior knowledge of the inner workings of the Division of Inclusion and Equity. Through my public relations work for the office, I learned about accessibility guidelines and diversity initiatives, and ultimately came up with ideas to make the university a more welcoming place for all.
